Case Was Updated To Show Fingerprints Were Taken

Short answer

This status means USCIS recorded that your fingerprints were taken at your biometrics appointment. USCIS uses them to verify your identity and run background and security checks, and your case then goes on with review. The message has no timing of its own, and the next step depends on the form. For scale, the median from filing to decision was 7 months for an I-485 filed on a family basis and 9.5 months for a civilian N-400 (April to June 2026).

What this status means

When you file many applications, USCIS asks you to go to an Application Support Center (ASC) for a biometrics appointment. There you give fingerprints, a photograph, a signature, or all three. USCIS uses them to verify your identity and run the required background and security checks.

“Case Was Updated To Show Fingerprints Were Taken” is the message USCIS shows once it has recorded that your fingerprints were taken. Three points about it:

  • It is not an approval or a denial.
  • It does not say how long the rest of the case will take.
  • It does not promise a new notice. USCIS sends one when it needs something or takes an action.

What comes next, by form

What follows depends on the form you filed. The last column is the median time USCIS took to decide that form, counted from filing, not from your fingerprints.

FormWhat comes nextMedian to decision
I-485USCIS reviews the case and decides whether to interview you. It may ask for more evidence. It then sends a written decision notice.7 months (family), 6 months (employment)
N-400Once the preliminary steps are done, USCIS schedules an interview. After a decision, you take the oath.9.5 months (civilian)
I-765USCIS also uses your biometrics to produce the work permit card. If approved, look for the card messages.6.4 months (with an I-485)
I-90USCIS also uses your biometrics to produce the replacement Green Card.5.5 months
I-751Review continues. USCIS may ask for evidence, schedule an interview or send a decision notice.22.6 months

Period for all medians: April to June 2026 (USCIS quarterly report). They describe the whole form, not your case. Details by category:

Can earlier biometrics be reused?

Only in some cases, and the rules differ by form. According to the USCIS Policy Manual:

  • Photograph: USCIS may reuse a photo taken at an earlier biometrics appointment if no more than 36 months (3 years) had passed when you filed.
  • No reuse for these forms: the N-400, N-600, I-90 and I-485 require new biometrics, including a new photograph.
  • Military naturalization: USCIS may use fingerprints collected earlier, in a different filing or at enlistment, for the required background check.

You attend an appointment only when USCIS sends you a notice (Form I-797C) with the date, time and place. If you cannot attend, reschedule through your USCIS online account before the appointment time.

What to do if nothing changes

  1. Check the status again on Case Status Online. It shows the last action taken on your case. USCIS says the online tool and your online account show the same information as the Contact Center.
  2. Check the normal processing time for your form and office on the USCIS processing times page. USCIS publishes the range there.
  3. If your case is outside normal processing time, submit a case inquiry on e-Request.
  4. Keep your address current with USCIS, so notices reach you. You can change your address through a USCIS online account. If a notice or document was not delivered, e-Request also covers that.
  5. Call the USCIS Contact Center if you cannot use the online tools: 800-375-5283, live calls Monday to Friday, 8 a.m. to 8 p.m. Eastern. For a simple case status question, the Contact Center sends you back to Case Status Online or your online account.

Frequently asked questions

Does 'Case Was Updated To Show Fingerprints Were Taken' mean my case is approved?

No. It only records that your biometrics appointment took place. It is not an approval or a denial. The decision comes later, with its own message and notice.

How long after the fingerprints is a decision made?

USCIS data does not give a time from fingerprints to decision. It gives the median from filing to decision for the whole form: 7 months for a family-based I-485, 9.5 months for a civilian N-400 and 6.4 months for an I-765 filed with an I-485 (Apr–Jun 2026). Your case can be faster or slower.

Do I have to do anything after my fingerprints are taken?

Not unless USCIS sends a notice asking for something. Keep your address current, watch your mail and your online account, and answer any request by its deadline.

Will I get an interview after biometrics?

It depends on the form. For an I-485, USCIS officials review the case to decide whether an interview is needed. For an N-400, USCIS schedules the interview once the preliminary steps are complete. Either way, USCIS sends a notice with the date, time and place.

The status has not changed for months. What can I do?

Compare your case with the normal processing time for your form and office on the USCIS processing times page. If it is outside normal processing time, submit a case inquiry through e-Request on uscis.gov.
